A note to everyone still using the iPod Touch Microphones iVoice III or iVoice Pro with their 1st Gen iPod Touch.
Do not upgrade your firmware to 3.1.1 unless you are OK with losing the functionality of iVoice III or iVoice Pro microphone. We can confirm that these mics remain functional up to software version 3.0, but the 3.1.1 upgrade disables the mics.
If you have not upgraded, we recommend to hold off until 3.1.2, where Apple will probably issue a fix. If you have already upgraded, and the mic function is more important to you than the functions in the 3.1.1 upgrade, then you should roll back your firmware version.
We cannot offer any official support on how to roll back your iPod Touch firmware to 2.2.1, however there is a lot of information out on the web. Some good places to research are the Apple forums, particularly this post about rolling back firmware. (Even though it is outdated, the methods can point you in the right direction.)
Also you can check out the YouTube video below from “EMAC” regarding how to roll back 3.0/3.1.1 firmware back to 2.2.1 on iPod Touch:
Note that the iPod Touch 3.1 firmware upgrade DOES NOT affect mics plugged into the 3.5mm jack on iPod Touch 2g & 3G.

Midomi Version 2.2 doesn’t work with iVoice III. Stick with 2.1 – it works fine.

Could be posible to get some kind of patch to fix it or do you think we just have to wait for a new 3.2.1. firm…?

iPod touch firmware 3.1.2 still disables ivoice iii
Apple had better not have purposely disabled this, or I will be very angry!

Still doesn’t work with 3.1.2, same symptom. Hold off until… well, until there is a fix!

There is no patch yet unfortunately. We will need to wait and hope Apple decides to fix the problem, or revert to old firmware.

Thank you admin. But, if Ivoice works with 3.1.1. in skype (Jeff barnett said that), I assume that it could be pacthed somehow without a firmware upgrade. Well, this is almost what I wish…

Ok, this is BS. I have found my IvoiceIII(thought I lost) and plugged it into my Itouch 3g 64GB version. with latest firmware(3.1.2) and loaded up the Voice memos program. The Mic lite up, the meter was going up and down with my voice, started to record a file which it was recording and then, the mic light went off and a message saying that “this device is not supported” came up. Even though, I was using it just fine seconds before? what is going on? It would be one thing to plug it in and get nothing, but to plug it in, have it work and then a minute later of actual use to decide it’s not compatible? What’s going on apple?

Hi Blades,
Many products (such as the iVoice mics) require an “Activation Key” in order to work with the iPod and iPhone when plugged in through the dock connector.
Apple issues these “Activation Keys” (for a lack of a better technical explanation) to manufacturers, and this way is able to control their compatibility via their software updates. For some reason Apple has once again, either knowingly or not, decided to deactivate the iVoice mics on the iPod Touch. So this is likely why you are experiencing these symptoms. Whether Apple we be nice and reactivate the mics in a later firmware update we don’t know, and can only hope!
-TouchMic

Darn you Apple, damn you. I was rocking a touchmods mic on 1.1.4 jailbroke before the AppStore even existed. When 2.2 came out and supported the Macally IVoiceIII, I unjailbroke and spend 100’s of dollars on apps. Many of which I bought because of the mic support. When app developers said their app didn’t support for 1st gens I proved to them it worked just fine. The developers announced it to their fans (Voxie from BottleRocket). I was acclaimed in a blog. People were buying mics/iPod Touch 1st Gens/Apps that supported mics, that’s 1000’s I made Apple. And this is what we get in return. Well forget you Apple. When I get the iPhone 4G & the MacTablet (used of course) I’m going to jailbreak them so hard your nose’s are going to bleed. You lost a good one, and your phone freaking heritage has been lost. Your lack of integrity will create hardware vigilantes like me and before long you’ll be Microsoft. @Gizmopunk

Same thing happened to my audio input device for my macbook pro when I upgraded to snow leopard… Now I need to spend $300 or more to do what I was able to to just weeks ago on garage band & Logic…
Also, I have a 1st Gen iTouch with 3.1 upgrade, and a girlfriend who lives in Japan. -_-;

I just revisited this issue with my iPod Touch 1G & iVoiceIII. I was frustrated to find out that the iVoiceIII no longer worked with the latest version of the firmware. However, there does appear to be a workaround: rebooting the iTouch with the microphone installed does appear to allow most applications to recognize the mic (Skype, Voxie, etc). As long as the microphone stays plugged in, you should be OK. However, if it is unplugged and plugged back in again, the problems everyone has experienced will occur again.

I’m running the latest OS available for the iTouch – 3.1.3. The workaround isn’t all that great, since the problems with mic will resurface after the iTouch goes to sleep (even when the mic is left plugged in), requiring another reboot.
