I have 1st gen ipod touch with software version 2.2. my question is: do we need to jailbreak to use the microphone
for 1st gen ipod touch?

Hi Abhishek - you do not need to jailbreak your first gen if you are running software 2.2. However you can only use the mics that connect through the dock connector, and NOT the audio jack.

Also, some applications on the app store will not install directly on a 1st gen touch, so for those applications you would need to find a way to install on your 1st gen in order to use the mic. For example jailbreaking would do the trick for some of those apps, however we cannot recommend or take responsibility for anything that you decide to do with your iPod Touch, including jailbreaking.

How close (or how loud) does the sound have to be, to be picked by the Macally iVoice III? I’m wondering if it would work for taking voice notes in a meeting … capturing all the discussion in the group. This would be in a typical office space, 6 or 8 people together talking in a natural voice without any lapel mics, etc.

Hi Michael,

The iVoice III will record a normal conversational voice in an otherwise quiet room from up to 10-12 feet away, so yes the iVoice III would work, however it only records in mono (which is still OK for voice), as opposed to the iVoice PRO which records in stereo. All in all, we have tested it using the voice recording application Voxie in a simulated “office meeting” and the end result was a clear and fully audible recording of our simulated conversation.

The iPod Touch cover… does it protect the front of the iPod also? It looks like it just slips over the back and protects the back from scratches, leaving the front exposed.

Hi Sara,

The cover does not protect the front of the iPod Touch, only the sides and back. To protect the front you could combine the cover with our screen protector film, which protects the screen from scratches, ect… You get 2 silicone covers and 2 screen protectors in each order.

Do you think the quality of sound delivered by the iVoiceIII or iVoicePro would be good enough to record field interviews for inclusion in podcasts? I would only need mono recording, because I this helps keep the file size down, but do want good sound quality so that audio files sound professional when posted as a podcast.

Hi Brendon,

Yes the quality is good enough for podcasts when using either the iVoice III or iVoicePro. However keep in mind they do not have any windscreen or foams, which are helpful if you are outdoors for example. We are actually working on a small recording mic that will plug into the bottom of the 2nd gen touch audio jack and serve primarily as a voice recording and interview tool. We will also be including a foam/windscreen with it so that there are no pops and minimized background noise. We should have pictures and a description up on our site by end of next week of our new mic (which may best suit your purposes).

Does the volume control change the volume coming out of the iPod, or does it control a variable resistor within the lapel mic unit?

We cannot recommend jailbreaking as there are unexpected results, but we can confirm that others have has success using the iVoice mics on a jailbroken 1G touch running software version 2.2 or above.

The mic is built in onto the wire, if you look closely at the pictures of the product, the mic is the little “ball” that is located on the wire.

We would recommend 2 options for you:

1. The TouchMic iPod Touch Lapel Mic - This mic/adapter combo basically adds a quality microphone to any headset you already may be using, or prefer. So if you have a headset that you really like already, simply use this adapter to add a mic to the wire and you will be all set.

2. The Maximo Isolation in-ear buds- This set of earphones has a high-quality condenser mic built in onto the wire and is paired with a high-def set of in-ear buds (the “in-ears” are great if you need to cancel out any collateral noise (say a crowdy Starbucks).

As long as you have a 2nd Gen Touch the Maximo headset would work just fine, you would just plug it in and then run a recording app (like Voxie) from the App Store that uses a microphone.

If your touch has volume buttons on the left hand side it is 2nd Gen, if not it is 1st Gen.

The only first gen mic we have in stock is the iVoiceIII, you can check it out on our site under “1st Gen mics”.

Hi Carolyn,

Our best mic which is built for interviews/podcasting is the MityMic. As long as you have a 2G iPod Touch no jailbreak or modification of any kind are necessary. You simply open the package and plug in the mic. The mic will work with the Voice Memos app that came with 3.0 firmware, as well it will record with any other application that requires a mic to be plugged in for recording. For example: HT Recorder, Voxie Pro Recorder… ect..

I prefer a headset as compared to using earbuds. I find the a eadset speaker more comfortable than an earbud in the ear. Do you have a headset type of unit with a mic arm that holds the mic closer to the front of the face?

Hi, I’m looking at the lapel mic for my Ipod Touch 2G.. Basically what I am hoping to acomplish is to make notes and observations as I am out photographing. This seems like an ideal solution. Does the button on the lapel allow starting and stopping of recording, or would I still need to do that from the ipod itself, or is this more of a software type of thing.

Hello Chris,

The TouchMic Lapel Mic would work well for recording in your situation as it has an un-intrusive little lapel clip, however the button on this mic does not stop/start recording, but rather is there for music and voice control. You would need to start/stop recording on the ipod itself, unless someone came up with recording software that enabled the buttons while the recording app was active. The good thing about the lapel mic in your situation is that you would not need to have headphones plugged in for it to work.

The MityMic will work just fine with iPod Touch 3G. With most apps you will have to remove the MityMic in order to hear the sound. However, some apps (like Skype) allow you toggle between the onboard speakers even when a mic is plugged in. So in the end it’s really a software issue.

HI, we would not recommend the iVoice Mics for your 2nd or 3rd Gen iPod Touches. Our MityMic would be a good choice for Shazam or Evernote. If you need to listen to your music through headphones while recording then we would suggest the TouchMic Lapel Mic.

Hello, I know the Mitymic will work with the Touch 3G and I was wondering theres an application called Midomi Sound Hound in which you go into the application and place the touch by a speaker playing a song you don’t know the title and the app. tells you the name of the song. Now, I don’t know if the 3G touch comes with an internal microphone or not, but this app. is exclusive to the I phone which has a microphone built in especially for that app. called Sound Hound. Now Apple offers a headset w/ a microphone built in but there $79.00 and they don’t stay in my ears. Please tell me you have a solution to my dilemma. Hi David,

This is really dependent on your hardware setup. A good way to test whether the mic would work is by doing this:

1. Plug in your Touch via the dock into your car stereo.
2. Plug in a headset into the 3.5mm jack.

If you still hear music over your car speakers, even when a headset is plugged in, then our mics would work at the same time.

Yes, the handsfree lapel mic combo would add a mic onto your favorite “mic-less” headphones. The controls on the lapel mic are compatible with voice control (just hold down the button for more than 3 seconds on the lapel mic to activate).

We would recommend the MityMic for recording music, it will work with Skype too, but the person on the other end will need to be heard through the onboard iPod Touch Speaker instead of any headset (since this is where the MityMic plugs in). Hello, I have a 1g Ipod Touch running OS 3.0. I have installed Skype as I will be travelling abroad in the near future, and I do not want to pay outrageous fees for calling back to the U.S. However, because the Ipod Touch does not have a microphone, I am desperately in need of one. I have read that the IVoiceIII Pro works with software 2.2.1, but I have upgraded. Please point me in the right direction.

Hi,

I’d like to use this with an iPad in my car. I am currently using a dual purpose dock cable with a USB connection for charging and another connection for audio input to my stereo.

I saw the comment about the mic disabling the internal speaker but do you know if audio out from the dock will still be active if the MityMic is connected? I’d like to use it to improve VOIP calls.

I have a 2nd generation iTouch 8GB with iOS4. Elsewhere I purchased a headset with a mic and it does not work. Is there a mic you provide that will work for me?

Hi Jonathan,

If you have little volume buttons along the left hand side of your Touch then it is 2nd Gen (or 3rd) and all headset/mic combos should work, as well as all of the products we have for sale here at TouchMic.com. If you need further answers please just email us at Support@TouchMic.com.

Hi Christine,

Unfortunately at this point you would need to revert back to 2.2.1 (which we no longer recommend as you would lose the ability to run many modern apps). We would advise to purchase a used iPod Touch or wait until the next gen iPod comes out.

Hello Michael,

The MityMic will work with iPad and it will improve the quality of the built in mic in terms of blocking out ambient noise and only recording in the direction you point the mic into, as it is a unidirectional mic as opposed to the “catch-all” omni built in mic.

Hi. I have an iPod Touch 2G and recently upgraded the OS. Does the MittyMic work on all such upgrades? Also, does the microphone work on non-Apple products (e.g. a Kodak digital camcorder)? Thanks.

Hi, I am currently using iPod Touch 1g with firmware version of 3.1.3. Will I be able to use skype with Macally iVoice III or Macally iVoice Pro? In addition, since I see that those products are now sold out, is there any way I can get it elsewhere or be shipped to my place? I live in California.

Three questions:

1) Does the Mity Mic work well on an iPod Touch 3G (32 gig) with iOS 4 installed?

2) What is the format (wav, mp3, etc.) of the recorded files (I expect to be recording bagpipe music)?

3) How are these files transferred to a computer?

The MityMic will work with the upgraded OS on both 2nd and 3rd Gen Touches. It will likely not work with the Kodak camcorder.

You can try Amazon or Ebay to see if you can track down an iVoice Mic. If you look a couple of posts down, another poster outlined how he gets his iVoice III to work with 1G touch.

Hi Kirk,

1.) Yes MityMic works with all versions of iPod Touch aside from 1G, and all OS.
2.) The format output will depend on the recording app you use (there are many). Often you get .aiff or .wav output.
3.) Again this is a fuction of the app you are using, but most have a way to log in to your Touch through a local network via IP address, then you just download the files you need.
